Mississippi Department of Health COVID-19 Vaccination Information
Who Can Be Vaccinated
Individuals 16 and older can receive the Pfizer vaccine, and those 18 and older can receive the Moderna vaccine. Both vaccines require two doses for full protection. The second dose of the Pfizer vaccine will be given 21 days after the first dose, and the second dose of the Moderna vaccine will be given 28 days after the first dose.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women can get the vaccine; we recommend that they, along with those who are immunocompromised, consult with their health care provider before taking the vaccine.
Who Should Not Be Vaccinated
You should not take the vaccine if you have had severe reactions from previous vaccines or injectable medications.
Vaccine Side Effects
Like with most vaccines, you may experience some minor side effects, a sign that the body is developing a proper immune response. They should go away in a few days.
Common side effects include:
- Pain and/or swelling on the arm where you got the shot
- Fever
- Chills
- Tiredness
- Headache
Please contact your doctor if redness or tenderness where you got the shot worsens after 24 hours or if you continue to experience side effects after a few days.

COVID-19 Prevention
Even if you get the COVID vaccine, it is still possible to contract the virus. While the vaccine will diminish the effects of the virus, you could still spread COVID to others.
Here are some of the best ways to help slow the spread of the coronavirus:
- Practice social distancing; keep about 6 feet between yourself and others, and avoid social gatherings.
- Listen to and follow state and local government directions.
- Wear a mask or cloth face covering in public settings and around people not in your household.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If you feel sick, stay at home.
- If someone in your household has tested positive for the coronavirus, keep the entire family at home.
- If you are an older person, stay home and away from other people.
- If you have a serious underlying health condition, stay home and away from people.
- Work or engage in schooling from home, if possible.
- Use drive-thru, pickup or delivery options for dining.
- Avoid nonessential travel, shopping trips and social visits.
- Do not visit nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
And always practice good hygiene:
- Wash your hands after you have been in a public place or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Sneeze or cough into a tissue or the inside of your elbow.
- Disinfect frequently used items and surfaces as much as possible.
